I don’t know if WYSIWYG is still a thing. I learned it over 30 years ago when I started doing LOTUS 123 spreadsheets (pre MS Excel days). It stands for What You See Is What You Get. Do you realize how true this saying is?
Take a look around you right now. What do you see? Stop. Really focus on this and list in your head the first five things you see.
Now, think about those five things. Are they things that bring you joy or things you don’t particularly like? Maybe you see things that are just there and you have no emotion about them. Think about what’s getting your attention because WYSIWYG.
If you saw the negative, the ugly, or the things you don’t like, that is what you will continue to see. If you saw stuff you don’t give a damn about, that is what you will continue to see. If you saw things that made you smile and brought you joy, then that is what you will continue to see. WYSIWYG. That’s just how it works.
If you don’t like what you are seeing, the great news is that you can change it! It takes practice. However, it is absolutely possible to start looking for the positives. When you do that, you will find more and more of them.
One of my coaches asked me to do an exercise and it was really simple – make a list of things that bring you joy. I’m not sure what she was expecting, but I do a flipchart each day with about 35 new items. I’ve hung them up in my home … WYSIWYG.
If I don’t take time to find joy in the small things, then I will likely miss it in the big things as well because I will be looking for something else. What’s on your joy list? Make one for yourself. Make one with your family. Find new things each day to add to it.
