12 Mar What Does Your Starbucks Order Say About You?
“I’ll have a lightly sweet Chai Tea Latte, non-fat, no foam, no water, no liquid cane sugar and extra hot, please.”
Yes, I am now the person I said I would never be. I remember overhearing people’s orders years ago, and saying to myself “I will never be that person.” Yet, as indicated from my order above, I am definitely THAT person.
I don’t even drink coffee. However, at my local Starbucks they call my order the Barb Special.
So, what does my Starbucks order say about me?
Does it say I am demanding?
Does it say I am entitled?
Does it say I am weird?
Does it say I am super picky?
Does it say I am self-confident?
If you ever wanted to see how many different perspectives there are on any of your teams (work, home, friends), take some of those people to Starbucks and let them order. People like what they like. Yet, when it’s different from what we like, we’ll often judge them, and write stories about them, just like I used to do about people with complicated Starbucks orders.
In fact, my friends would order Chai Tea Lattes, and even though I never had one, I had a story that I wouldn’t like it. Then one day I had one. It was as if the heavens opened and the angels flew down to surround my taste buds with drops of liquid bliss. I had literally tasted JOY!
Where in our lives, as leaders, are we judging others because their orders are different from ours? “What? They don’t like their coffee with two creams and a Splenda? What are they thinking?” Or, like me, what if they don’t like coffee at all? It may sound silly, however, I challenge you to see where you are doing that with the people on your teams at work or at home. Where are you expecting them to see the world through the same lens and perspective that you look through? And, just like that first Chai of mine, ask yourself what you might be missing by not being open to what others have to offer.
So what does my Starbucks order say about me? For you, it says whatever meaning you give it about me. You will write your story, and that will be what you see.
For me, my Starbucks order shows growth because I’m comfortable asking for what I want. For most of my life, I would have been very self-conscious asking someone to do all of that for me. Now, it says I am worthy of having my hot beverage exactly the way I want it, and I am happily willing to pay to get it that way. It also says I have fallen into a comfort zone, and it’s time to see what else is out there. What other tastes of JOY am I missing?
What does your Starbucks order say about you? What can you learn about yourself by examining some of the choices you make every day? The way you do anything is the way you do everything.
